Jesse Treviño, a Mexican-American visual artist living in San Antonio, Texas, died on February 13, 2023. He was born in 1946. He was regarded as one of San Antonio’s most well-known muralists, and the majority of his works featured the city’s Mexican American culture.

Juan Trevino and Dolores Campos welcomed Jesus “Jesse” Trevino into the world on December 24, 1946, in Monterrey, Mexico. He was the ninth kid they had. His father moved to San Antonio in 1906 from Sabinas Hidalgo in search of employment. Dolores was raised in New Braunfels and was born there in 1915.
When Juan traveled to New Braunfels to see his brothers who lived there, they crossed paths. The couple got hitched in New Braunfels, where they resided until racial unrest and economic difficulties forced the family to relocate to Monterrey, Mexico.
Until economic circumstances forced the family to relocate once more, this time to San Antonio, Texas, where they settled in the West Side area, Juan worked as a truck driver for building materials. There were many Mexican Americans living in this area.
When Treviño was six years old, he went to the Witte Museum and received his first art award there. He went to Fox Tech High School, where a teacher by the name of Katherine Alsup assisted him in getting a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York City in 1965.
Trevino enlisted in the military in 1966 with the intention of serving in Vietnam. He had the option of returning to Mexico as a citizen and avoiding military service, but he declined since Treviño would continue the military legacy started by numerous of his brothers.
He received his training at Fort Riley and served in the B Co., 39th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division. In December 1966, he was sent to Vietnam for service.
