According to a notification published by Dutch Mantell, Jerry Jarrett, a former wrestler, second-generation promoter, and the father of Jeff Jarrett, passed away on Tuesday morning.
Jerry Jarrett’s Cause Of Death
Jarrett was 80 years old. The reason for
death has not been disclosed.
Jarrett got his start in wrestling when his mother Christine started working with NWA Mid-America promoters Roy Welch and Nick Gulas, eventually rising to the position of the event promoter. At the age of seven, Jerry reportedly began peddling wrestling programs.
Although Jarrett may be better renowned for his administrative positions, he also competed in wrestling and turned professional in 1965. Before giving up wrestling for good in the late 1980s, he held championships in divisions including NWA Mid-America and Southeastern Championship Wrestling.
Since the early 1970s, Jarrett has worked as a promoter with his mother. In 1977, after parting ways with Nick Gulas over a disagreement, Jarrett created the Continental Wrestling Association in Memphis. Jerry Lawler served as Memphis’ most dependable star throughout Jarrett’s leadership as it rose to prominence as one of North America’s strongest and most illustrious territories.
The United States Wrestling Association was created in the late 1980s when Jarrett acquired the leftovers of Dallas’ World Class from the Von Erichs and combined the two organizations. Jarrett remained an employee of the USWA until 1995 when he sold his stock.
