Valdez Venita Demings, born March 12, 1957, is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative from Florida’s 10th congressional district since 2017. The district covers most of the western half of Orlando and includes much of the area around Orlando’s resort parks.

Jerry Demings, the husband of Val Demings, once held the position of Orange County Sheriff and is currently the mayor of that Florida county.
He held the position from 1999 to 2002, making him the first African-American to do so before his wife became the OPD’s first female head.
Val and Jerry Demings met while responding to a go-kart accident. She was the first officer to respond; he arrived later as an investigator. They married in 1988.
