Jerrika Hinton Interview
Was it intimidating to join such an established show?
JH: It wasn’t, for two reasons. One, they are a welcoming family. And two, when I joined, I didn’t even know I was joining. I thought I was just going to be on for one or two episodes. I think—had I come on as a full-fledged series regular—yes, I would have been incredibly intimidated and stressed out. But I kind of got the benefit of naiveté and ignorance. I thought, ‘Oh it’s a one-week job, I will be fine.’
What was it like to work with some of the bigger talents on the cast?
JH: Chandra Wilson is an amazing human being. I love her. I want to be her when I grow up; I want to be here now. I want her to be my best friend and [for her to] come over and we can braid each other’s hair. I adore that woman. She is so wonderfully generous and artistic. And Ellen [Pompeo] and Patrick [Dempsey]—they are professionals. You learn a lot by watching them, really. Obviously coming into this empire, that was invaluable.
Did you and Chandra bond over the fact that you guys are both from Texas?
JH: A little bit, yeah. Last year, actually, I got to do a really lovely photography commission for her. So we got to take that bonding to another level. We are pretty much BFFs [Laughs].
So, just speaking of another big cast member—Sandra Oh left. How did that change the dynamic on the set?
JH: Well, we all went into a staggering depression—and I’m only half joking. She is a force. [I’m] talking about generous actors and people who you share a scene with them and then you create your best work because you feel safe; you look across and see another human being staring back at you in the eyes. She is just as supportive as you would hope somebody to be. She would always look out for the scene, not just for herself.

Your character was part of a really serious storyline this season and last season when Jackson, Stephanie’s boyfriend, dumped her to declare his love for Dr. April Kepner…
JH: I feel like that redefined the word dumping.
Yeah, it was dramatic! What was it like acting out something that intense?
JH: Heartbreaking. I mean you’re not putting on any artifice. When it happens to the character, it happens to you. That scene took forever to shoot, legitimately all day. So all day, getting the build-up of, ‘Oh yay, we are happy; oh no, we are devastated.’ Doing that, for 10 hours, I will never forget that day.
