What did Jeremy Kappell say| do?
Television meteorologist Jeremy Kappell lost his job one day after Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren and City Council President Loretta Scott called for his firing for making a racial slur during a broadcast. An executive at the station, WHEC (Channel 10), apologized to viewers on the air during an evening broadcast Monday. During a weather forecast on Friday that showed a live shot of the city’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, Jeremy Kappell appeared to call it “Martin Luther Coon King Jr. Park.”
Martin Luther Coon Weatherman Racial Slur
A racist term for Martin Luther King that is very commonly used in the south. Black Man: “Is you workin’ da’day” White Man: “No, today is ‘Martin Luther Coon Day’ so I have the day off.
Martin Luther King Jr Jeremy Kappell
Jeremy wasn’t the first person to utter “Martin Luther Coon King Jr.” on the air, and not the first to apologize for it. At least four other TV news personalities, including ESPN sports talk-show host Mike Greenberg, have done the same thing. All of them apologized and said their use of the term was a slip of the tongue. WHEC (Channel 10)’s Kappell was fired for his utterance. So was a Las Vegas weatherman who used the term on-air in xxxx.
The three other on-air personalities, including Greenberg, kept their jobs. Greenberg’s use of the same offensive phrase came nine years ago during a broadcast of the Mike & Mike TV and radio show that he co-hosted on ESPN
According to a recording of Jan. 10, 2010, that survives on YouTube, Greenberg said he and co-host Mike Golic were “talking football with you on this Martin Luther Coon King Jr. holiday …” Greenberg apologized later that day after realizing some viewers had taken offense.
“I’m sorry that my talking too fast and slurring my words might have given people who don’t know our show the wrong impression about us, and me. I feel horrible about that because nothing could be further away from who I am and what our show is about,” he said in a written statement. “I would never say anything like that … and I’m very sorry that my stumble this morning gave so many people the opposite impression.”
Jeremy Kappell Petition
The purpose of this petition is to inform WROC-TV and Nexstar Media Group of how many people support Jeremy Kappell and wish to see him take on the role.l He was wrongfully terminated from WHEC-TV in January 2019 after experiencing an on-air linguistics error. Without being given the chance to explain himself, he was also publicly defamed by station management.
Since his termination, many viewers have stopped watching and station ratings have declined. Over 67,000 signatures were collected requesting that WHEC-TV give him his job back. In the time since Jeremy has been off the air, he and his wife Lisa have developed a nightly weather and entertainment program based out of their home.
Supporters have been blessed with getting to know the Kappell family in the past few months and encourage him to sign the petition to WROC-TV so that he can continue his passion for meteorology and provide a stable income for his family.
Jeremy Kappell Rochester Meteorologist Fired
It was “wrong, hurtful and infuriating” that News10 WHEC had aired the slur, Warren wrote, criticizing the station for being too slow to apologize.
She also called for Kappell to be fired.
“While referring to African Americans in the racially derogatory, insensitive and vulgar language needs to be addressed immediately,” Warren said in the statement, “there are other issues at play as well that feed into this cultural ignorance.”
What Happened to Jeremy Kappell?
United States judge has dismissed a lawsuit from former WHEC-TV meteorologist Jeremy Kappell who sued the station after he was fired for uttering a racial slur on air. State Supreme Court Justice William Taylor on Monday also dismissed Kappell’s lawsuit against the city of Rochester and Mayor Lovely Warren, who Kappell alleged helped push WHEC to fire him.
Taylor ruled that evidence showed Kappell did make the statement Kappell claimed that he did not intentionally use the slur and it was a verbal slip and that WHEC-TV (Channel 10) could rightly fire him. Kappell sued, alleging a breach of contract, emotional distress, and defamation.
On a January 2019 broadcast, Kappell said of a video at a city skating rink, “This is the way it looked out at Martin Luther Coon King Jr. park at the ice rink.” Kappell said he verbally slipped between “Luther” and “King” and twisted the words into the racial slur, “coon.
Jeremy Kappell Whec Racial Slur
A television meteorologist is out of a job one day after Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren and City Council President Loretta Scott called for his firing for making a racial slur during a broadcast. An executive at the station, WHEC (Channel 10), apologized to viewers on the air during an evening broadcast Monday.
During a WHEC weather forecast on Friday that showed a live shot of the city’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, Jeremy Kappell appeared to call it “Martin Luther Coon King Jr. Park.” The station’s vice president and general manager, Richard A. Reingold, confirmed Kappell’s dismissal in a statement Monday. “As a result of that broadcast, meteorologist Jeremy Kappell is no longer with News10NBC,” Reingold said. “We believe strongly in holding our reporters and anchors to the highest standard.”
Kappell, who had been WHEC’s chief meteorologist since October 2017, said Monday evening that the incident had been “a simple misunderstanding” that arose because he “jumbled a couple of words.
“I know some people did interpret that the wrong way. That (“coon”) was not a word I said, I promise you that. If you did feel that it hurt you in any way, I sincerely apologize,” Kappell said in a four-minute video statement he posted on his Facebook page.

This fund will make it possible for Jeremy and Lisa to continue to broadcast Weatherlive@9:45 and possibly help with better video and forecasting equipment. The account, called “I Stand Behind Jeremy Kappell,” was set up last week by Jessica Kappell (who also refers to herself as Jessica Batman), and identifies herself in the campaign as Kappell’s sister. The campaign, with a fundraising goal of $10,000, was set up to “help with expenses and their needs during this time of transition,” she said.
He himself posted a message to the page Sunday, thanking his sister for setting up the campaign as “living and legal fees mount.” “This will become a huge help as we move down the path toward career redemption and change,” said Kappell.
Since his firing, community debate heated up surrounding Mayor Lovely Warren’s statements on the incident and Kappell’s handling of the situation. Outside voices, including King’s daughter Bernice King and NBC’s Today Show’s Al Roker, have weighed in and said that Kappell shouldn’t have been fired. Over 56,000 people have signed a Change.org petition supporting him and at least one advertiser has pulled its commercials from WHEC, citing the controversy.
