David became the highest-paid baseball player in the league after he signed a three-year $18 million contract with the Royals in 1993. That contract alone is worth around $33 million in today’s money after adjusting for inflation. Born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1963, David Cone made his starting pitcher MLB debut on June 8, 1986 for the hometown Kansas City Royals. He played with the Royals briefly before joining the New York Mets from 1987 until 1992. Cone owns the American League Cy Young Award from 1994 and led the American League in wins four years later in 1998. He twice led the National League in strikeouts (1990, 1991), and recorded a perfect game on July 18, 1999 as a member of the Yankees.
