JB Straubel is an American businessman who was the inaugural chief technical officer at Tesla, until moving to an advisory role in July 2019.In 2017, Straubel founded Redwood Products, working on lithium-ion battery recycling and e-waste. In addition to his role at Tesla, Straubel also worked on the SolarCity board of directors.
He was also a lecturer at Stanford University, where he taught the class on energy storage integration (CEE 176C & CEE 276C) in the 2015-2016 academic year’s Environment and Energy Program. In 2017, Straubel founded Redwood Products, working on lithium-ion battery recycling and e-waste. Straubel had been Volacom’s CTO and co-founder along with Harold Rosen before Tesla. At Scaled Composites, Volacom worked closely with Burt Rutan to develop a versatile high-altitude aircraft platform using a novel hydrogen powered electric power plant. At Volacom Straubel co-invented and patented the latest idea of long-endurance hybrid propulsion which was subsequently licensed to Boeing.
In the field of technical competence, Straubel has, in addition to several other private equity investors, partnered with VC firms Taproot Ventures and Kleiner Perkins to perform strategic diligence reviews for many start-ups in the category of energy and clean energy technologies.
