Jay Maisel (born January 18, 1931, Brooklyn, New York) is an American photographer who works in the field of portraiture. His honours include induction into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame, the American Society of Media Photographers’ Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography. Maisel studied painting and graphic design at the Cooper Union in New York City and at Yale University before pursuing a career as a photographer in 1954. On the cover of Miles Davis’ album Kind of Blue, Maisel captured a portrait of the jazz musician that has become one of his most well-known pictures. A cover artwork based on the original Kind of Blue album cover was made by Andy Baio in 2009 for the cover of a chiptune tribute album named “Kind of Bloop,” which was released in 2009. Attorneys for Maisel sought damages as well as the removal of the resultant picture from the chiptune album, which resulted in an out-of-court settlement with Baio for $32,500. Maisel and his family reside in the historic Germania Bank Building in downtown Manhattan, which dates back to the late 1800s. The single-family house, which is 35,000 square feet (3,300 m2) in size and has 72 rooms spread over six stories, was built in 1898. Maisel bought the building for $102,000 in 1966, at a time when the area was in a state of serious deterioration. In 2008, the building’s worth was estimated to be between $30 and $50 million. According to New York Magazine, it was “perhaps the greatest real-estate coup of all time.”
