Independent filmmakers Mike Stoklasa (formerly of GMP Pictures) and Jay Bauman founded Red Letter Media (stylized as RedLetterMedia) to produce films and videos (formerly of Blanc Screen Cinema). Stoklasa founded the business in Scottsdale, Arizona in 2004, although it is currently headquartered in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Stoklasa gained notoriety in 2009 after a 70-minute video review of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released in 1999. The review was given by his persona “Harry S. Plinkett” and was released in seven sections on YouTube.
While Stoklasa has previously released video reviews for Star Trek films in The Next Generation series, The Phantom Menace and subsequent Star Wars prequel reviews were acclaimed for their substance as well as their presentation. Stoklasa has also created short comedy and online series (The Grabowskis); review-based web series (Half in the Bag and Best of the Worst); and concert, wedding, and corporate films under the RedLetterMedia brand. Feeding Frenzy, The Recovered, and Oranges: Revenge of the Eggplant are just a few of his low-budget horror and humour films. Bauman has been a director and producer on most of Stoklasa’s films, having directed him in many low-budget pictures under the Blanc Screen Cinema label. Stoklasa has also hired colleague Rich Evans as a full-time actor and stagehand for their next projects.
