KHOU reporter gets the go-ahead from news director to wear braids, gives  boss huge social shout out

Television news viewers can be hyper-critical about the look of on-air personalities. Many times they will look past what TV journalists are reporting, and focus on what the reporters are wearing, and how they style their hair.

So when KHOU 11 News reporter Janel Forte recently considered putting her hair in braids, she asked her news director, Sally Ramirez, with a bit of hesitation. Forte documented the exchange on her Instagram page.

Forte says she was pleasantly surprised by the reaction of her boss. “I’ve heard so many horror stories about conversations women have had with their news directors about their hair, and what they can, and can’t do with it, and disproportionately it would happen to women of color.”

Last September, meteorologist Corallys Ortiz at WBBJ in Jackson, Tennessee posted to her Facebook page a garbled voicemail from a viewer that criticized her natural hairstyle, and sounded like might have contained a racial slur.

“I want Janel to be her authentic self,” says Ramirez. “Our newsroom, like all of Houston, is made up of people from all different backgrounds and upbringings. It’s important that we give people the freedom to be themselves at work and on-air.”

Forte added, “I hope Sally sets the bar for other bosses.” By the way, Janel, the braids look great.

Firefighters battled heat, flames from mulch fire in E. Houston

Firefighters battled a mulch fire for several hours overnight in east Houston. Fortunately, the fire is out now but not without some challenges first. The fire started at a Republic Services Facility on Oats Road early Wednesday.

The company collects trash and recycling. Signage at the site state that the facility handles compost, mulch, wood, and brush – all things that burn easily.

It took firefighters several hours to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters not only had to battle temperatures that were still in the 80s overnight but also had to improvise to get water to the engines working to knock the fire down. They had to lay a nearly half-mile hose line to have an adequate water supply. Luckily, no one was hurt in the blaze.

Police hope surveillance video will help ID man who caused panic at Memorial City Mall

Investigators with the Houston Police Department hope surveillance video of the chaos at Memorial City Mall over the weekend will help pinpoint the man who started it all.

Police said Sunday they plan to release more video of the incident to the public in an attempt to get more leads in the case.

Witness videos making the rounds on social media give us a glimpse into the chaos, which led to two people getting hurt.

The cell phone videos show hundreds of people yelling and screaming as they seek shelter from what many believed was an active shooter at the west Houston mall.

According to HPD, it was about 3:15 p.m. Sunday when a man in his late teens or early-20s put on a red mask and threatened to kill himself while standing on a food court table. The suspect threw down a bag and then ran from the mall to nearby apartments.

Some witness videos indicate there were popping sounds during the chaos. Initially, it was believed the popping sounds were the result of firecrackers, but police later said no fireworks were involved and the sound was caused by the man jumping on the table.

Law enforcement and the public were already on high alert following the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio last weekend. With tax-free shopping, this weekend in Texas, police across the state were prepared for big crowds.

Houston police said two people were hurt in the resulting stampede: a 16-year-old and his mother. The injuries were said to be minor.

As shoppers ran for safety, many left their personal belongings behind. Those will be gathered and taken to customer service where they can be claimed Monday.
