Jane Fallon Interview
Author Jane Fallon on life with Ricky Gervais, Faking Friends and chick noir
The idea for Jane Fallon’s latest book Faking Friends – which tells the treacherous story of a woman whose best friend has an affair with her fiance – was inspired by a real-life fake friend. “They’re hard to come by, those people that you really genuinely think have got your back at all times and I kind of thought she was one of those,” says Fallon of her former friend. The fallout came when the author told her friend that Penguin was going to publish her debut novel, Getting Rid of Matthew. “There wasn’t even a second where she looked pleased for me. She just pulled a big face and said: ‘Oh my God, it’s not going to be chick-lit, is it?’ in this really disgusted voice, and I just thought: you’re not my friend, you can’t be my friend if that’s your reaction when something like this happens.” Fallon admits she let the friendship “fizzle out” but the incident gave her an idea for a book – albeit involving a betrayal of a different kind. “I just find it really fascinating the things that people to do people that they’re supposed to love,” she says. One look at the author’s back catalogue confirms this. Her books frequently center on wronged and vengeful wives, cheating husbands, and the inevitably messy repercussions. Her ideas used to come from mercilessly picking her friends’ brains about their lives. “ Then they got wise to it and now they won’t tell me anything,” she laughs. “Now I pick their brains about their other friends’ traumas.” Living with Gervais Are any of her plots inspired by her own life? Fallon is the partner of comedian Ricky Gervais so you’d be forgiven for wondering whether any of these dastardly men were inspired by him. No, she tells me, politely. “I think if I’d mined my own life I’d have probably run out pretty quickly.” In reality, life with Gervais seems pretty, well, normal. Yes, the pair jet off to Los Angeles every now and again for awards ceremonies (Fallon has got used to writing in hotel rooms) but it’s a lifestyle she only enjoys “dipping in and out of”.
She could never live in LA. “I would never want to live somewhere that didn’t really have weather,” she says. The glitzy glamour of it all is fun, sure, but Fallon is grateful that that’s not her every day. “I’m lucky that I can step away from that.” Is Gervais supportive of her career? “Completely,” says Fallon, although she reveals she can’t work in the same space as her partner. “I like silence and he likes music.” Worlds apart Gervais has also never read one of her novels. “He’s read one novel in his life which is Catcher in the Rye and I basically said to him you can’t read Catcher in the Rye and then read one of mine, it’s just not fair on me.” Does she ever worry that people will think her success as an author is down to her famous other half? “It used to worry me in the beginning,” she says. “I used to really want to make the point that obviously I’d had a successful career already in terms of writing and fiction – just in a different genre.” Fallon previously worked as a TV producer on programmes such as Eastenders and Teachers. “It was very important to me that I would never do anything that was piggy-backing off him,” she says. “Now I sort of think this is my eighth book, I kind of feel like hopefully people have realised that that’s not the case.” Chick noir Fallon describes her books as “chick-noir”. How does she feel about the term chick-lit? “I blow hot and cold with it,” she admits. “It is slightly patronising.” On the one hand, she claims, if it encourages people to read books, she’s not so worried. And on the other? “It’s just odd that a guy can write a book that tonally is very similar to a female writer’s book about relationships but one will get called chick-lit and the other one will get called fiction.”
