Jamie Orchard Leaving Global News
After 23 years of fighting to tell the truth to Global Montreal’s viewers, Jamie had to keep a secret. She was brought into her boss’s office on July 22 2020 and told she’d be among the dozens of Global News journalists laid off to offset massive losses at the company. She agreed to keep it quiet until her final broadcast Thursday evening 20 August 2020 and in return, they let Jamie say goodbye to her viewers on air.
“I wasn’t going to lie about it, I wasn’t going to say it was some sort of deal, I left against my will,” Orchard said. “I would never leave my team and I would never abandon my city. I was going to stay at Global for as long as they let me.”
Jamie a longtime anchor was among the small team of reporters that launched Global Montreal 23 years ago. During her tenure at the station, she covered Ice Storm 98, the Summit of the Americas protests and the Dawson College shooting among countless other stories.
The Evening News with Jamie at the helm in 2007 was named best newscast in Eastern Canada by the Radio/Television News Directors Association. She worked at CTV and CBC news prior to her stint at Global.
Jamie was named one of city’s most remarkable women by the Board of Trade of Montreal in 2004 and was a finalist for the YWCA Women of Distinction in 2007.
An active volunteer, in 2008 Jamie won the Izzy Asper Community Service Award for her work with the Action Centre, an organization that provides help for physically and mentally challenged Montrealers
Beyond her colleagues, she says what she’ll miss most about the job is her sense of responsibility to the audience and the people who trusted her to tell their stories over the years.
“The biggest compliments I’ve received from sources is that they felt heard, they felt listened to,” Orchard said. “And the biggest compliment from viewers is when they’d tell me they felt at home watching the broadcast. … My mother died last year and she was my biggest fan. She would get all her friends to watch and I was texting those ladies today, thanking them and trying to make sure they didn’t get the news from the live broadcast.”
After the better part of three decades chasing news stories, Orchard isn’t sure what comes next. For now, she’s started a blog called Sisterhood Second Act, where she’ll interview women who’ve had to make career changes midway through their professional lives.
“I have to work, I have kids, I’m not done but for now I’ll try to rest and figure things out,” Orchard said. “I’m grateful I got to go out telling the truth. I’m someone who is driven by heart and I hope that came across in the broadcast”
