James Simon Wallis Hunt was a British racing driver who won the Formula One World Championship in 1976. He died on June 15, 1993. Hunt became a television pundit and businessman after retiring from racing in 1979. Hunt began his racing career in touring cars before moving on to Formula Three, where he caught the eye of the Hesketh Racing team and was quickly taken under their wing. Hunt acquired the moniker “Hunt the Shunt” for his high-octane racing exploits. Hunt debuted in Formula One in 1973, driving for the Hesketh Racing team in a March 731. Before joining the McLaren team at the end of 1975, he won for Hesketh in both World Championship and non-Championship races, driving their own Hesketh 308 vehicle.
Hunt won the 1976 World Drivers’ Championship in his first year with McLaren, and he stayed with the team for another two years, albeit with less success, until joining the Wolf team in early 1979. Hunt withdrew from racing halfway through the 1979 season after failing to complete a series of events. After retiring from motor racing, he went on to work for the BBC as a Grand Prix commentator. He was renowned for his expertise, insights, dry humour, and his criticism of drivers who, in his opinion, were not trying hard enough, which earned him a new fan following. Hunt, 45, died after a heart attack. On January 29, 2014, he was inducted into the Motor Sport Hall of Fame.
