Ng Fok Hong (also known as Frank W. Hong) and Lee Shui Fa, Chinese immigrants, were Hong’s parents when he was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on February 22, 1929.
His father immigrated to Chicago, Illinois, from Hong Kong via Canada.
He eventually relocated to Minneapolis, where he opened a restaurant and served as the local Hip Sing Tong head. Grandfather Hong was a native of Taishan.

Huang, who is currently semi-retired, relocated to Taos, New Mexico in 1997, where she worked as the director of international programs and taught courses on Chinese language and culture at the University of New Mexico.
She also started her own Ru Yi Studio of Multicultural Arts, where she still teaches, and the nonprofit Taos International Society.
