James was born in Los Angeles and bought up in Manhattan. He is the son of the actress Kay Johnson and actor, producer and director, John Cronwell. He has English descent and studied at the Middlebury College and at the Carnegie Mellon University. His interest in performing at the theatre came from his parents. He worked on some experimental plays when he was young.
In 1974, he made his first TV performance in the show “The Rockford Files” and went on to receive his first lead in TV for the show “Hot I Baltimore”. In 1976, James made his debut in movies with a detective spoof named “Murder By Death”. He kept on appearing in guest roles in many television shows during this time. His contribution to the television has been noteworthy. For his role as a newspaper tycoon in the movie “RKO 281”, James received the Emmy Award.
