James Bower is an American neuroscientist who was born and brought up in Northampton, MA.as James Mason Bower. He also serves as the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Numedeon Inc., the company behind the educational virtual world Whyville.net.

He received his bachelor’s degree in neurophysiology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1982, after graduating from McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, New York. He went on to Antioch College and Montana State University as an undergraduate.

Bower was a professor at the California Institute of Technology from 1984 to 2001, and then at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 2001 to 2013.
