His political career began in 2011 where he contested the 2011 federal election in the federal riding of Bramalea—Gore—Malton which resulted in a narrow victory for Conservative opponent Bal Gosal; he became MPP in the overlapping provincial riding later that year.

In 2015, he became deputy leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party, serving under leader Andrea Horwath until 2017. Singh announced his candidacy for the federal New Democratic Party leadership following a leadership review that resulted in a leadership election to replace Tom Mulcair. Singh was elected leader on October 1, 2017, with a first-round vote of 53.8% in a field of four.

Upon his election, Singh became the first person of a visible minority group to lead a major Canadian federal political party on a permanent basis, and the second overall after the Bloc Québécois’s former interim leader Vivian Barbot. Singh is also the first turban-wearing Sikh to sit as a provincial legislator in Ontario.

He has been widely recognized in Canadian media for his fashion and style sense. Ideologically, Singh identifies as both a progressive and a social democrat. ‘It’s a good night for the NDP. Full stop.’ Jagmeet Singh secure in leadership, despite early stumbles

BURNABY, B.C.—The New Democratic Party is poised to play kingmaker in a minority parliament after Jagmeet Singh spearheaded a turnaround on the federal campaign trail that may have saved his leadership and pulled his party from the brink of irrelevance.

Having started the election campaign with low expectations, a diminished war chest, and a precariously low position in the polls, New Democrats hailed Monday’s result at a “victory” party in a hotel ballroom in Singh’s riding east of Vancouver.

Singh will now lead a caucus in the House of Commons that was knocked down to the fourth place and is barely half the size it was before the election but will still find himself in an amplified position of power. Alongside the emboldened Bloc Québécois, which roared back to life with an enlarged contingent of its own, Singh’s New Democrats won enough seats to separately hold the balance of power in a Liberal minority.

That means that, despite their diminished footprint in parliament that includes near annihilation in Quebec, Singh can try to make good on his pledge to push Justin Trudeau’s government to the left.

Taking to the stage before scores of supporters Monday night, Singh promised to play a “constructive role” in the next parliament as he fights to implement universal pharmacare, build more affordable housing, pursue true reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and increase taxes on the “super-wealthy.”

“These are the priorities of people that New Democrats will put at the heart of the conversations that we’re going to have in the days and weeks to come,” Singh said.

“We have the incredible opportunity to make the lives of all Canadians so much better.”

But while Singh and his partisan supporters celebrated Monday’s result, the NDP saw sharp losses in Quebec, where late-night results showed only one New Democrat — Montreal’s Alexandre Boulerice — elected. The party was also shut out in Toronto and wiped off the map in Saskatchewan, where it won three seats in the last election.

Yet even before results poured in, Marie Della Mattia, the NDP’s campaign co-chair, told the Star on Monday there is no doubt Singh is secure in his leadership, given his performance on the campaign trail.

“There’s a sense that we built a relationship, and that it’s a good one, and that we can build further on that,” she said.

In some ways, the story of the campaign for the NDP is the opposite of the 2015 race, when the NDP’s hopes of leaping from official opposition to the government were dashed by the rise of Justin Trudeau’s Liberals.

From the start, Singh positioned himself as the antidote to that disappointment.

Singh was first elected as an MPP in Brampton, a suburban city in the 905 that until then had been a wasteland for New Democrats. Singh’s bid for the federal NDP leadership was a gambit to repeat that breakthrough at a much larger level.

Jagmeet Singh Parents, Education, Early life, Mother, Father, Religious

Singh was born on January 2, 1979, in Scarborough, Ontario, to Harmeet Kaur and Jagtaran Singh, immigrant parents from the Indian state of Punjab. His mother is from Ghudani Khurd, in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, while his father is from Thikriwala, in Barnala district.

His great-grandfather was Sewa Singh Thikriwala, a revolutionary who fought against British occupation in India. After a year as a toddler living with his grandparents in India, Singh spent his early childhood in St. John’s and Grand Falls-Windsor, both in Newfoundland and Labrador, before relocating with his family to Windsor, Ontario. Singh has publicly discussed suffering sexual abuse as a child, as well as having a father who was alcoholic and abusive.

From Grade 6 to 12, Singh attended Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills, Michigan. Singh went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Western Ontario in 2001 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School in 2005. He was called to the Bar of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 2006.

Singh has two younger siblings, brother Gurratan and sister Manjot, who were both born during the family’s time in Newfoundland. Giarratano, who is also a lawyer and politician, has been described as Jagmeet’s “secret weapon”. Gurratan Singh was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2018 Ontario election, representing the riding of Brampton East.

Singh worked as a criminal defense lawyer in the Greater Toronto Area before entering politics, first at the law firm Pinkofskys, then at his own practice, Singh Law, which he established with Gurratan.

During his time as a lawyer, he offered free legal rights seminars across Ontario and provided pro bono legal counsel for people and community organizations in need.

In a Toronto Star article published on January 9, 2012, Singh stated that his background in criminal defense contributed to his decision to enter politics, particularly his work advocating for the protection of rights entrenched in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
