Jade Raymond Google
The next battle for gaming hearts and minds looks set to be fiercely contested by the world’s biggest tech giants, with companies across Silicon Valley looking ready to commit to conquering the world’s most lucrative entertainment industry. Their statements of intent could have traditional players Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo looking over their shoulders. Last night, it was announced that Google had bolstered its gaming credentials with the appointment of former Ubisoft and EA executive Jade Raymond as Vice President.
The move comes ahead of Google’s big gaming push, with the company ready to unveil its ‘vision for the future of gaming’ at its keynote at the Game Developers Conference next week. Raymond revealed the news herself in a tweet, simply saying she had joined Google as a VP. While there was no clarification of her role at Google, Raymond’s is a highly reputable name within the game industry, regarded for her talent at building development teams.
While at Ubisoft, Raymond was a producer on the first entry into the enormously successful Assassin’s Creed series, served as executive producer on Watch Dogs, and opened the French publisher’s Toronto studio. Raymond joined Electronic Arts in 2015, opening the FIFA publisher’s Montreal-based Motive studio. After leaving EA in October of last year, Raymond is the second high-profile gaming executive to join Google as VP following the appointment of former PlayStation and Xbox exec Phil Harrison.
It shows a fascinating commitment to gaming, an industry worth $138bn in 2018, and expected to grow to over $180bn by 2021. While the company has an investment in gaming already through the sale of games on its Android store, Google’s GDC keynote (it is first, incidentally) on 19 March is expected to reveal its wider plans on cloud streaming games to any device. Streaming games from blockbusters to bite-sized treats – to any device without the need of a dedicated console is set to be gaming’s new frontier. Microsoft recently demonstrated its own upcoming XCloud service; streaming high-end Xbox One racing game Forza Horizon 4 to a smartphone. Public trials of XCloud are expected to begin later this year.
Quite how far out Project Yeti is from public use and what form it will take remains to be seen. A patent surrounding a proprietary controller from Google emerged at the weekend, suggesting the company is looking at hardware solutions to deliver whatever its vision may be. The controller will apparently be able to notify users of chat requests and game updates, likely to be a standalone device that connects to an app on a range of devices.
Jade Raymond Assassin’s Creed
In 2004, she started working for Ubisoft Montreal, where she led the creation of the first Assassin’s Creed game. Raymond went on to become an executive producer on Assassin’s Creed II and was executive producer of new IP at Ubisoft Montreal, which included Watch Dogs and The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot.
Jade Raymond Comic
Jade Raymond was the executive producer of Assassin’s Creed and Ubisoft milked her sex appeal as a young female excessively and shamelessly. What Ubisoft probably didn’t expect was the backlash that ensued. One gamer, who was so sick of seeing Jade Raymond’s face on every bit of Assassin’s Creed promo material he made a ‘satirical’ comic porn piece depicting the producer naked and performing various sexual acts on a bunch of geeky dudes to flog the game.
The comic was posted it on the Web site SomethingAwful. Ubisoft sued. The comic was removed from site. But since it is impossible to kill anything on the Internet, the comic work is still doing the rounds in cyberspace today.
Jade Raymond Stadia
For Google Stadia, Raymond says she sees two primary paths to creating games impossible on other platforms. The first one is at the heart of the Stadia sales pitch; with all of the number-crunching being done in the cloud, Google’s games can be designed around the limits of its own hardware rather than those of the users’ devices.
“There are a lot of things that being cloud-native enables that you’re just not going to be able to see on other platforms, and I think that’s the job of first-party, to really show that off and let people imagine what those things are.”
Whether it’s creating more detailed simulations, more advanced AI behaviors, or MMO-like experiences that redefine “massively multiplayer,” Raymond wants to see what developers can create once they have modern hardware constraints significantly lifted.
“A fully physics-simulated game is one of the Holy Grails of game creation since Trespasser was being imagined 20-something years ago, and now we finally have a platform where we’ll be able to deliver some of those experiences,” she says, name-checking Dreamworks Interactive’s ambitious yet ultimately unsuccessful 1998 Jurassic Park tie-in.
The second big opportunity Raymond sees for Google’s own Stadia games is the ability to incorporate the company’s non-gaming technology. She specifically pointed to Google’s AI tech as an opportunity, noting a Duplex demo the company gave where an AI assistant called up a stylist to book a woman’s haircut in a (mostly) natural-sounding conversation.
Raymond was also excited about the kinds of content that could become possible through the integration of Stadia tech with Google’s other offerings like YouTube. As an example, she suggested a novel treatment for a documentary about the history of video games.
