Jacob Bernstein is famously known for being the brain behind documentaries such as “Everything Is Copy (2015),” “In & Out (1997),” and “You’ve Got Mail (1998).” He is also known for being the oldest son of Nora Ephron, an American journalist, filmmaker, and writer.

Aside from being known as a journalist, Jacob is known more as a writer and director, especially after he brought back her deceased mother from the dead with the production of his latest documentary, “Everything Is Copy (2015).”

In this article, however, I will share facts about Jacob Bernstein, how he brought his dead mother back from the dead, and a few other interesting things you probably didn’t know about him. Before we continue, let’s take a quick look at his profile summary.

Profile summary

Name Jacob Bernstein
Date of birth  August 22, 1978

Nationality American
Siblings Max Bernstein
Father Carl Bernstein
Mother Nora Ephron

Jacob Bernstein Biography

Jacob Bernstein was born on August 22, 1978, in his home country, the United States of America, and is currently old. With Leo as his zodiac or astrological sign, Jacob was raised along with his only sibling and younger brother, Max Bernstein (born in 1979).

We gathered that Nora Ephron (mother) and Carl Bernstein (father) are the names of Jacob’s parents, information on the internet confirms that his parents divorced each other in 1980 while Jacob was barely two years old. Like him, his younger Max was still a kid, barely one year old. After getting married in 1976 and going their separate ways less than half a decade later, Jacob’s parents remarried. However, they jointly raised their two children (Jacob and his brother, Max). Carl is now married Christine Kuehbeck.

That being said, Jacob holds American citizenship by birth, belonging to the White-American ethnic classification.

Jacob has white skin color, brown hair, and a pair of beautiful dark brown eyes. Undoubtedly, Jacob is quite reserved when sharing details about his personal life on the internet. Because of this, little less is known about his childhood and early life, by extension. Needless to point out, details about his body parameters are obscure—he seems pretty healthy from the look of his pictures on the internet; otherwise, we could not lay claims on his exact body fittings.

Jacob is not open about his relationship or his sexual orientation. He is however supportive of the gay community. He has his dog as his closest friend.

Jacob Bernstein Education, Career

Jacob Bernstein had his elementary and high school education at local schools in the neighborhood he was raised. Upon obtaining his elementary school graduate certification and high school diploma, he proceeded to Vassar College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

And although Jacob studied English, he moved to the journalism career path after working briefly as a production assistant on his mother’s hit 1998 comedy series, “You’ve Got Mail.” “I worked on “You’ve Got Mail” for about a half-second. I took jobs as a location scout when I was in college for films like Joel Schumacher’s “Flawless,” Jacob pointed out in one of his interviews after his mother passed away.

Knowing more about careers and job descriptions, Jacob has contributed quite a lot to the media industry—working as a journalist and reporter. As it were, he has contributed features and media coverage to prominent media outlets, including but not limited to;

  • Rolling Stone
  • The Daily Beast (website)
  • New York Magazine
  • The New York Times, and a handful of others.

Widely known for being the son of a now-deceased journalist, Jacob Bernstein is also known for his work in;

  • You’ve Got Mail (1998)
  • In & Out (1997)
  • Everything Is Copy (2015)—one of his latest works.

Jacob Bernstein Brought Back His Mother From the Dead

Now, “Everything Is Copy (2015)” is a documentary compiled to sort of, according to Jacob in one of his interviews, bring back memories and the life of his mother to live. According to Jacob in an interview with an American-based online magazine, Roger Ebert, published on March 21, 2016, in part;

“I didn’t feel like a co-conspirator. But the secret is part of the reason of(sic) why I was driven to talk about it for two-plus years. I realized that other people might be more articulate on this subject than me. It was a moment when self-analysis fails(sic) when you are trying to explain something slightly unexplainable. And I do think I wanted to keep talking about her and what happened.”

Speaking of co-conspirators and the sort, Nick Hooker co-directed this documentary. And well, this documentary focuses on telling the story of how his mother lived some parts of her life that were better documented than left uncovered. Accordingly, many of his mother’s peers and collaborators, including actresses Meryl Streep and Mike Nichols, were interviewed; made part of the co-conspirator. Also, his father, Carl Bernstein, was interviewed. According to the information, his father spoke about the affair that broke up their marriage and served as the basis for Nora Ephron’s 1983 novel “Heartburn.”
When asked about whether or not he has the “filmmaking bug now,” Jacob Bernstein said in full:

“Yeah, I want to do another documentary. But it will be harder to get financing, despite people responding well to it. I want to stick with documentaries and maybe do one or two more of these. I am not running to jump into narrative film(sic). They cost money and I’d like to be ready for it. There is nothing bad about taking my time. Documentary filmmaking feels like a good extension of what I have done as a journalist.”

And speaking of journalism and the media industry, Jacob Bernstein currently works as a reporter for Styles desk, where he has been working for the past decade—he started working with Styles desk in 2013. A writer for celebrities, fashion designers, and artists’ profiles and stories, Jacob also shares his attention at The New York Times on L.G.B.T. issues. Also, stories relating to the furniture design industry and philanthropy are some of his main focuses.

Jacob Bernstein’s Mother, Nora Ephron, is Dead

Nora Ephron was born on May 19, 1941, in New York, New York City, in the United States of America, and was supposed to have been 81 years old in 2023. However, she died on June 26, 2012, in the New York-Presbyterian Emergency Room, New York, United States, at 71 after a brief illness. Nora was raised by her parents, Phoebe Ephron and Henry Ephron, in the US.

While her career journey lasted and her life elongated, Nora Ephron achieved quite a great deal of success. She was a journalist, filmmaker, and writer who we now know for her notable works:

  • Sleepless in Seattle
  •  You’ve Got Mail
  •  Silkwood
  •  When Harry Met Sally and several others.

Nora Ephron held a Bachelor of Arts degree from the prestigious Wellesley College. And well, she was married to Carl Bernstein (married between 1976 and 1980). Carl Bernstein, an American journalist, is notable for his contributions to breaking the Watergate scandal for The Washington Post. After her divorce, Nora remarried Nicholas Pileggi, whom he was married to between 1987 and her death in 2012.
