In 2005, he began to accumulate junior titles, including the Swedish Open, Norwegian Open, Northern Ireland Open, German Open, and Dutch National Youth Championship, which he also successfully defended in 2006.

In the following years, however, he dominated darts, taking home 18 event victories in 2015 and 25 in 2016. After Phil Taylor, Van Gerwen has had the second-most success in PDC history.

By winning Players Championship Event 3, defeating Ian 8-5 in the final, he broke Taylor’s previous record of 70 wins on the PDC Pro Tour, giving him 84 victories as of July 2022. In February 2019, he also surpassed Taylor’s previous record of 70 achievements.
