It was in 1982 when she started writing for the Boston Globe. From 1995 until 2000, she worked as a senior writer for Sports Illustrated, where she covered the NBA. On Larry Bird’s book Bird Watching: On Playing and Coaching the Game I Love, which was published in 1999, MacMullan worked with him as a collaborator. She collaborated with Geno Auriemma on the 2006 book Geno: In Pursuit of Perfection, and she co-wrote the New York Times best-seller “When the Game Was Ours” with Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, which was published in 2009.

In 2011, MacMullan worked with NBA great Shaquille O’Neal on the writing of his autobiography, “Shaq Uncut,” which was published in 2011. A former sports reporter for various cable television networks, including ESPN, CNNSI, NESN, and WHDH-TV in Boston, MacMullan has also worked as an anchor for a variety of radio stations. She appears on the ESPN show Around the Horn on a regular basis as a panellist. She has also appeared on episodes of the network’s Pardon the Interruption series as a co-host. The following is what she had to say in reaction to MacMullan’s resignation from the Boston Globe in an email to the blog site Boston Sports Media Watch: On May 12, 2010, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame presented the Curt Gowdy Media Award to Jackie MacMullan and veteran Cleveland Cavaliers radio play-by-play announcer Joe Tait, in recognition of their contributions to the game of basketball. Awarded to members of the print and electronic media who have made a major contribution to the game of basketball, the awards are given out every year. MacMullan was the first woman to win the award in the award’s 21-year existence, making her the first female recipient. A contentious position among members of the Boston media arose on May 4, 2013, when MacMullan wrote a piece for ESPN in which she recommended that the Boston Celtics should break ways with team captain Paul Pierce.
