He was selected by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round, 105th overall, at the 1991 NHL Entry Draft following a productive season with GKS Tychy in 1990–1991 in which he scored 40 points in 24 games.

For the 1991–92 Elitserien season, he then signed on with Djurgrdens IF, becoming the first foreign player to play for the team since Canadian Steve Cardwell in 1976–77.

Czerkawski didn’t play much during his first season, but after being loaned to Division 1’s Hammarby for the 1992–93 season, he significantly improved. The 1993–94 season saw him return to Djurgrdens, where he scored 34 points in 39 games.
