What Happened At Capitol Hill?
On January 6, 2021, a crowd of Donald Trump supporters invaded the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. They attempted to reverse his loss in the 2020 presidential election by interrupting the joint session of Congress convened to tally electoral votes that would certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win.
Trump rallied thousands of supporters in Washington, D.C., on January 5 and 6 to back his bogus claim that the 2020 election was “stolen by empowered radical-left Democrats” and to demand that Vice President Mike Pence and Congress reject Biden’s win.
Over 30 anti-government activists, including the Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, and Three Percenters, were charged with conspiracy for allegedly plotting assaults on the Capitol; 10 Oath Keepers and five Proud Boys were charged with seditious conspiracy, and one Oath Keeper pled guilty.
The incident also claimed the life of several people, some died at the scene while others committed suicide in the days and months that followed the incident.
