The Mole on Netflix is the perfect choice if you’ve been seeking a new reality competition show with a straightforward yet intriguing premise.
After a 14-year sabbatical, the cult favorite reality competition show is back with a new presenter (Alex Wagner), a new network, and all the suspense and mind-bending detective work you remember.
If you haven’t seen The Mole, the plot is surprisingly straightforward: a group of people cooperate to complete missions and increase their reward pot, except one of them is the Mole, who works covertly to destroy missions in the process.
Twelve competitors, each eager to win, face various physical challenges. But each participant is perfectly aware that there is a Mole among them. The Mole’s main objective is to sabotage the other players as effectively as possible by taking the role of the unknowable obstacle in every mission.
Warning: This article includes spoilers for The Mole’s first five episodes, now available to stream on Netflix.
Is Netflix’s The Mole Scripted or Reality?
Based on the carefully chosen settings and the extensive editing, “The Mole” appears as unscripted as is humanly possible because there are no alternate outcomes or pre-planned outcomes.
Having said that, it’s important to emphasize that you should always treat any reality production with skepticism because you can never be certain of the extent of producer engineering.
Based on the Belgian pattern, The Mole, which debuted as an ABC competition series over five seasons (including celebrity versions) between 2001 and 2008, combines conventional physical and cerebral missions with a classic whodunnit element.
The Mole, which is back for its sixth overall season but its first on Netflix, looks slightly different in 2022 than in the early aughts. This is partly because of fresh mission ideas and advancements in elimination technology (more on both in a moment), but it’s also because of the cast.
The competition’s goal is for participants to identify who the Mole is. This is done through a series of identity-related quizzes that appear during gameplay. A player will correctly answer most questions and be able to continue playing if they have reasonable suspicions.
History Of Show, “The Mole”
The Mole is a translation of the Belgian reality program De Mol, which debuted in 1998. Since then, the format has been used in 40 different countries. The version that airs the most regularly is Wie is de Mol?, a Dutch program that has been running for 22 seasons and has been on television since 1999.
In January 2001, the American adaptation of The Mole debuted. The first two seasons were shown all year long. However, the September 11 attacks seriously hurt ratings. Reruns that summer was successful, which led to two seasons with famous guests that aired in 2003 and 2004.
The show subsequently vanished for four years before its rights were again gained, and a new civilian version began airing in 2008. Unfortunately, low ratings led to the show’s cancellation up until this point. The Mole’s earlier seasons were all broadcast on ABC.
Who Is The Mole Winner?
Netflix has also kept the stakes high for The Mole fans; rather than releasing every episode at once, the streaming service has staggered them out over three weeks.
So, until October 21, 2022, we won’t know the Mole’s true identity. The way the Mole’s identity is kept a secret from viewers continues to be the show’s cleverest gimmick. As each episode progresses, it enables the viewer to participate and speculate on who the Mole might be.
The audience cannot be privy to all participant theories and planning to preserve the mystery surrounding the identity of the Mole. By the conclusion of each season and in the finale, we learn some of these details, but you have the impression that there is much more that we cannot portray because of time and editorial restrictions.
You are praised or criticized depending on whether you take the initiative or follow the leader, are too talkative or quiet, are bad at sports, put too much money in the pot or take it all away in one go. The tasks have also received some good twists and turns from the producers.
If you’ve seen The Mole’s first five episodes, you already know that some participants have been kicked out of the game for failing to recognize the betrayer.
We believe that Osei, Samara, Dom, and Sandy cannot be the Mole because they all received the red smartphone screen during elimination unless the production staff planned something dramatic.
Prize Money
Young Anderson Cooper introduced the game as the host, outlining how participants will compete in a series of tasks to add money to a growing pot worth up to $1 million.
The game show also includes extra challenges that force contestants to decide whether to put themselves or the bigger prize pool first. If contestants are willing to wager some of their prize money (like Joi Schweitzer did, to the tune of $25,000) and/or participate in additional missions that put players against one another rather than working as a team, they may be able to avoid elimination.
