From 1992 through 2001, Kay and Sterling worked as the Yankees’ radio broadcasters on WABC for ten years. Additionally, in 1998, Kay and Sterling collaborated on Sports Talk with John Sterling and Michael Kay, a nightly radio program aired on WABC.
The pair ran Yankee Talk during the baseball season, a weekend pre-game radio show. He aired his presentation on WABC from 1992 until 1993. He moved to the newly launched YES Network on television after WCBS purchased the radio rights to the Yankees broadcasts in 2002, while Sterling stayed on the radio. Since then, he has served as the Yankees’ primary television play-by-play announcer.
During the All-Star festivities in 2008, Major League Baseball invited him to announce the Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium. He called the seventh inning of ESPN’s coverage of the final home game at Yankee Stadium against the Baltimore Orioles on September 21, 2008, along with Jon Miller and Joe Morgan.
Miller claims that because the YES Network was not permitted to broadcast the game, ESPN believed it essential to feature the local aspects of the Yankees’ broadcasting for this unique occasion.
