Football in Georgia: The bizarre tale of Ladd McConkey’s travels prior to receiving a UGA offer

For his performance against Auburn, Ladd McConkey was selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday.

Add it to the magnificent peaks the former mountaineer at Chatsworth’s North Murray High School has conquered. Sixteen days before he was scheduled to sign on the typical signing day in February 2020, Georgia made a scholarship offer to him. They did so first among Power 5 programs.

These days that seems advantageous. McConkey helped beat the Tigers by catching six passes for 135 yards. He started the 34-10 victory on the road at Jordan-Hare Stadium with a 45-yard explosive play, and then he came back with a 60-yard touchdown catch.

He would have been a one-person wrecking crew versus Virginia Military Institute instead of destroying Auburn for 135 yards. He would have changed the result of the Mocs’ weekend loss to VMI, which was 37-34, with all due respect to the Mocs.

Preston Poag, the North Murray coach, claimed that if things with Georgia didn’t work out, “he would have probably gone to play at UTC.” That was the situation. You are aware of how hiring works. Despite what these colleges claim, he never received a genuine offer. They made him an offer.
