Veteran heavyweight boxer Kaur Singh, a former Olympian and recipient of the Padma Shri and Arjuna awards passed away on Thursday morning at a private hospital in Kurukshetra, Haryana.
He was 74 years old and apparently had a number of health problems. Singh is survived by a daughter and two sons.
Singh, a farmer from Sangrur’s Khanal Khurd hamlet, joined the Army in 1971 and participated in the Indo-Pak conflict from the Barner region of Rajasthan.
For his efforts in the conflict, he received the Sena Medal and the Vishisht Sena Medal. Singh’s boxing career began during his time serving in the Army.
He made his senior national boxing championship debut in 1979 and took home the gold.
