Justin Simmons had to deal with a comparison when his high school football career got started.
The Martin County High School player couldn’t help but hear the muttering during the first few games. “Victor’s child,” was said.
Simmons’ father was a safety for the Martin County Tigers who patrolled the defensive backfield thirty years prior.
Victor, who calls himself a former “blue-chip player,” claimed that before his senior year, big institutions expressed interest in him.
He ultimately found Justin’s mother at West Virginia Wesleyan, and the two eventually moved back to Stuart, where Justin would have the opportunity to carry on his father’s legacy.
The early games, though, weren’t simple.
“That was tough for me because we just played differently,” Simmons said in his hometown earlier this offseason. “I believe they had similar expectations. I simply kept to what I was knowledgeable about and excelled at.
