Judy Heumann, an American disability rights activist who passed away on March 4, 2023, received praise from all around the world for her contributions to the disability community.
She devoted her life to advancing the civil rights of people with disabilities, and through her partnerships with governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, for-profit businesses, and numerous other disability interest groups, she made a significant contribution to the enactment of laws and policies pertaining to human rights that, since the 1970s, have benefited both children and adults with disabilities.
Heumann was instrumental in mainstreaming disability rights into international development during her time at the World Bank and the State Department, which increased the independent living movement’s influence on a worldwide scale.
When Heumann’s application for a teaching license in New York was denied due to a disability in 1970, she felt prejudiced and sued the Board of Education.
As her case was settled without going to trial, she became the first person in a wheelchair to teach in New York City.
As a result of the public coverage of her situation, she received an outpouring of compassion from disabled people across the country, prompting Heumann and a group of friends to co-found Disabled in Action (DIA) in 1970.
The group works through political protest to guarantee that people with disabilities are protected by civil rights laws.
