A witness captured the incident in a disturbing video on Sunday. It shows Nuezca pulling out a revolver and killing the gray-haired mother in the head, followed by her son as they gripped each other, before reshooting them both.
After the video went viral, the police officer was subjected to an administrative investigation and was charged with murder. He has since surrendered to the authorities.
The most recent event elicits widespread outcry over the thousands of police killings in the Philippines since Duterte’s populist election in 2016. As of the end of September, about 6,000 people had been killed in police operations due to his brutal drug war.
Human rights groups estimate that 30,000 people have died, including those killed by masked vigilantes. According to Human Rights Watch, during the pandemic lockdown, drug war deaths increased by more than 50%.
When Nuezca shot Gregorios, he was accompanied by his daughter. She was present during the altercation as well as the gunshot. Cabico made no mention of the presence of the young girl.
Cabico went on to say that Nuezca and the Gregorios had long had a quarrel over the right of way, which came up again during their Sunday altercation.

Jonel Nuezca’s wife is Leilanie Aquino Nuezca. Elisha Aquino Nuezca is the couple’s daughter.
His daughter and wife were also present at the crime scene. They both watched Jonel take out a gun and shoot the two Purok people.
Elisha takes her father’s side in the video and speaks out against the victims. She seemed to be quite proud of her father’s profession as a cop.
Both the father and the daughter are seen walking away nonchalantly after the murder. Her daughter was just 13 years old at the time.
