On Memorial Day in 2019, Jill and Erik got engaged for the first time with an elaborate beach proposal.
However, the engaged couple decided to separate in May 2020. They told PEOPLE that holding a long-distance relationship during the COVID-19 pandemic had taken a toll on them.
Martin said it was not working between the two at the time, and that they were arguing more than getting along with each other.
She initiated a chat with her ex for the first time in 18 months. “Brooks was stunned to hear from Jill but took some time to process that first conversation,” said Jill.
