Jerry Richardson, the founding owner of the Carolina Panthers and a longstanding dominant force in the NFL, passed away at the age of 86. According to a statement from the team, he gently died on Wednesday evening at his home in Charlotte.
Richardson was the first ex-NFL player to operate a business before George Halas, owner of the Chicago Bears. He founded the Carolina Panthers in 1993, and the team’s first season began in 1995.
Before joining the Panthers, he was a wide receiver for Wofford. He still owns multiple records there, including the most receiving yards in a game and the most touchdown receptions in both a season and a career.
Richardson enjoyed widespread acclaim for his generosity and commitment to Wofford College. After giving the institution more than $250 million, the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium was built in his honor.
He also contributed to the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts, which is named after his wife and contains the university’s theater and art departments.
Together with his contributions to Wofford, he also provided $4.1 million to Limestone College in honor of his high school coach and to upgrade the school’s athletic facilities.
