Gary Wang was a cryptocurrency billionaire until the empire he built with Sam Bankman-Fried collapsed in November 2022.
The co-founder of Alameda Research and FTX Gary Wang served as chief technology officer for both firms.
Wang co-founded the crypto exchange FTX and helped grow it into a leading marketplace for buying and selling crypto derivatives. FTX enabled customers to trade digital currencies for other digital currencies or traditional money; it also had a cryptocurrency known as FTT.
Before co-founding Alameda Research and FTX, Wang worked as a software engineer at Google, where he developed price aggregation systems for Google Flights.
The cryptocurrency billionaire topped Forbes’ 2022 list of the world’s billionaires under 30 with a net worth of $5.9 billion in April 2022.
Most of his fortune was tied up in a 16% stake in FTX and a share of its FTT tokens.
After users started withdrawing their investments from FTX at a rapid pace, Bankman-Fried filed for bankruptcy for FTX, FTX’s United States operations and Alameda Research.
