Where Is Cary Stayner Today? Is He Dead Or Still Alive In Prison?
Cary Stayner has been on death row since December 12, 2002, at San Quentin State Prison in California. Yes, he is still alive and well in prison.
The story begins with his younger brother Steve being abducted by a sexual predator when he was seven years old and then returning seven years later after eluding the predator Parnell.
Then Steve made the news, and Cary was still suffering from some sort of disorder before Steve died in a motorcycle accident in 1989.
Cary’s uncle, Jesse Stayner, was shot to death in the home he shared with Cary in 1990, and that was the final nail in the coffin.
Cary began his career as a maintenance man at the Cedar Lodge in El Portal, California, on Highway 140, which leads to Yosemite National Park.
Carole Sund, her daughter Julie, and Julie’s friend Silvina Pelosso vanished from the Cedar Lodge in March 1999.
Carole and Silvina’s charred bodies were discovered in the trunk of Carole’s rental car, about 50 miles from the hotel.
Authorities discovered Julie’s body near a reservoir after receiving an anonymous letter.
Even though authorities later discovered that the letter was written by Cary, it was clear that he wasn’t a suspect at the time.
Cary assassinated Joie Armstrong, who was alone in a cabin in Yosemite.
Witnesses identified Cary’s 1979 International Scout, which had been parked outside of Joie Armstrong’s cabin, and he was apprehended.
Despite his plea of insanity, a jury found Cary Stayner sane and convicted him of all four counts of first-degree murder in 2001.
On December 12, 2002, he was sentenced to death and became the 617th inmate on California’s Death Row. Stayner has been incarcerated at San Quentin Penitentiary since January 2018.
