Ryan Coogler, the director of the critically acclaimed films Black Panther and Fruitvale Station, was briefly detained by Atlanta police in January after being mistaken for a bank robber.
As per the Atlanta police report, the 35-year-old filmmaker was detained and handcuffed on January 7 after going to Bank of America to make a transaction.
Coogler, who wore a hat, sunglasses, and a Covid face mask, went to the bank’s counter and handed the teller a withdrawal slip that reportedly read, “I’d like to take $12,000 cash out of my checking account. Please count the money somewhere else. I’d like to remain unobtrusive.”
However, when the transaction amount exceeded USD 10,000 and prompted an alert notification from Coogler’s bank account, the teller misconstrued the situation as an attempted robbery and notified her boss of her concerns. They then called the police as a group.

In January, Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther, was briefly detained by Atlanta police after they mistook him for a robber at a Bank of America.
Variety reports that he confirmed the news to the publication and stated, “This situation should not have occurred. However, Bank of America worked with me and resolved the issue to my satisfaction, and we are now moving on.”
When police arrived, they found a black Lexus SUV outside the bank with its engine running and two passengers, a woman and a man, seated inside.
The pair informed an officer that they were waiting for Coogler, a “movie producer,” who was making a financial transaction.
According to the report, the cop asked the man for a description of Coogler, which matched the description of the male suspect who was “attempting to rob the Bank of America,” according to the report.
