Alexei Navalny is a lawyer who is also a Russian opposition leader. Find out more about Alexie Navalny in this article.
Alexei Navalny is a Russian opposition figure, lawyer, and anti-corruption campaigner. He has organized anti-government protests and ran for office to fight for changes against corruption in Russia, including against President Vladimir Putin and his administration, who avoid mentioning Navalny by name.
He is the chairman of the Anti-Corruption Foundation and the head of the Russia of the Future Party.
Navalny has over six million YouTube followers as of 2021. He exposes material against corruption in Russia on his social media platforms, conducts political demonstrations, and pushes his initiatives. In a 2011 radio broadcast, he referred to United Russia, which is Russia’s ruling party, as a “party of thieves and crooks,” coining a catchphrase.
Navalny was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being exposed to a Novichok nerve toxin. He was airlifted to Berlin for medical treatment and released a month later.
Navalny is currently serving a three-and-a-half-year jail term for a separate embezzlement case. He was detained after arriving in Russia last year after surviving a poisoning attempt in 2020.
In a new criminal trial, which his supporters say has been eclipsed by the Ukraine crisis, Russia might sentence Alexei Navalny to up to 15 years in jail in a new criminal trial.
According to his family and allies, the Kremlin is hoping for an easy conviction by putting the trial in a prison colony far from his base of support in Moscow.
