Jim Kelly began his career in the Irish civil service in 1984, first with the Department of Energy and then, beginning in 1985, with the Revenue Commissioners.
He began part-time study for a business degree at University College Dublin in 1986. He left the Revenue Commissioners in 1989 to pursue his studies full-time, graduating with honors in 1990.
After several years in private industry, he joined the diplomatic service of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin in November 1993.
He most recently served as director of the newly established Policy Planning function at DFA HQ, reporting directly to the Ministry’s Secretary-General.
Jim was nominated by the government to be Ireland’s next Ambassador to Canada in January 2016, a position he formally assumed on September 6, 2016. He will also be accredited to Jamaica and the Bahamas on a secondary basis.
