iPhone X features, price in Kenya, specs, release date, everything you need to know

Apple Inc. has introduced the iPhone X, its premium smartphone that CEO Tim Cook says represents “the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone.”

The much-anticipated device was unveiled at a glamorous event at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple’s California headquarters. Two other phones, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, as well as the Apple Watch 3 and Apple Watch 4K TV, were also unveiled at the event.

Apple, which last saw a huge drop in sales this year when consumers rejected the last device, the iPhone 7’s lack of new features and resemblance to the iPhone 6 may have won back the hearts of its customers, who all flocked to the dramatic redesign of the new device.

Fans queued for hours ahead of the event, and Craig Federighi had to try twice before successfully unlocking the phone using one of the new features – facial recognition. Fans have embraced the glass and stainless steel device.

iPhone X price and release date

The iPhone X doesn’t come cheap for consumers as it heralds the age of the $1,000 smartphone.

Apple released two versions, a 64GB version that will cost $999 and a more expensive 256GB version for $1,149. In Kenya, the 64GB phone costs at least KSh 150,000, while the latter sells a bit more. This price is due to the increase in previous prices for imported iPhone models.

The phone was available for pre-order from October 27, but was typically released on November 3, 2017.

iPhone X features

As you’d expect, the iPhone X has all the latest tech, including an edge-to-edge OLED display, wireless charging, and facial recognition security.

It also comes with a large screen that takes up the whole front, albeit with a small band cut into the top of the screen. The screen is a 5.8-inch OLED Super Retina display. 2438 × 1125 resolution with 458 pixels per inch.

The back of the phone is essentially glass. It has a 12-megapixel dual-lens camera like the iPhone 7. The selfie camera is 7-megapixel and can be used for 3D tracking.

Apple also dropped the iconic iPhone home button. The display is now activated simply by tapping the screen. To navigate, you can access the home screen by swiping up from the bottom. To multitask, swipe up and pause. The side button is dedicated to Siri.

TouchID has been replaced by Face ID. A pple’s TrueDepth camera system allows users to unlock their phone by simply looking at it. The small band at the top has seven separate sensors built into it, and that’s how the company hopes to fix bugs with previous face unlock systems. It also works at night.

The iPhone X is the first iPhone to come with wireless charging as the new iPhone X uses Qi wireless charging. In addition, Apple plans to launch a wireless charger called AirPower in 2018 that can charge multiple devices at the same time.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are upgrades to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, although they are similar in appearance.

Their processors are the A11 Bionic, which according to Apple is “the most powerful and intelligent chip ever found in a smartphone”.

Both models have glass on the front and back of the device, reinforced with laser-welded steel and copper, making them dust and water resistant.

They feature an HD retina display and a 12-megapixel camera.

While the iPhone X doesn’t have a home button or Touch ID, the iPhone 8 retains both features and is also without Face ID.

The iPhone 8 will go on sale on September 22nd with pre-orders starting September 15th.

The iPhone 8 costs £699 for the 64GB version, while the iPhone 8 Plus starts at £799 (64GB). 256GB versions will also be available.
