Benjamin Rutten, known professionally as Ben Rutten, is a former Australian rules football player.
Rutten played in the Adelaide Crows team for 11 years as a defender and played 229 games with the team, scoring nine goals.
Rutten was known for his strength, size, and ability to contain some of the game’s best forwards in the Australian Football League.
Before his time in the Adelaide Crows, Rutton was in the South Australian National Football League club, West Adelaide. Rutton was recruited from the team in the 2001 Rookie Draft.
After spending two years training, he made his Australian Football League debut in 2003, first as a forward, and by doing so, joined an elite club of players who have goaled with each of their first three kicks.
However, Rutten would succeed more in the back and was moved to defense.
The player made a name for himself as a tough full-back. He began to come into his own in the 2005 AFL season, where as a member of Adelaide’s sturdy defensive unit, he held his opponents to two goals or less.
It was due to Rutten’s impressive showing in the 2005 AFL season that he earned a place on the All-Australian team 2005.
