As a Canadian citizen, he falls under the category of YouTube content creators who get paid $2-$12 per 1000 monetized views after Youtube takes its cut. The longer the viewers watch the video, the higher the amount paid to the content creator is, and Stephen creates short and sweet, almost ten-minute videos, which are the sweet spot of monetization.

What Is Actually Stephen’s Real Name?

Canadian YouTuber Actually Stephen’s real name is Stephen Ng which he revealed during various Q&As.

He was born on September 14, 1996, and turned 26 recently.

Although not a lot is known about Stephen’s ethnicity besides that he is of Asian descent of some sort, his last name Ng is of Chinese origin.

So, one can surmise that whatever Stephen’s ethnic origin is, it is somehow related to Chinese descent. He has three siblings, but only one of their names is known. That sibling is Gavin Ng, who is two years younger than Stephen, and helps him run the “Actually Stephen” channel.

He started his Youtube career after joining DanPlan, the Canadian Youtube animation channel.

What Is DanPlan?

The channel DanPlan has amassed 2.02 Million subscribers as of the writing of this article.

The channel joined YouTube on July 13, 2014, and posted its first video, “By the Way: Moral of the Pooping Robber,” on August 2, 2014.

The channel initially was a Let’s Play channel, albeit with a group of people rather than one person in front of a camera, but quickly returned to its “By the Way” format where every video would be titled “By the Way” and then followed by whatever the video was about.

The channel’s seeds were sown back when co-founders Daniel Lim and Hosuh Lee were attending high school.

According to Lim and Lee, what DanPan eventually became was formed during an English class lecture, where Lee showed the class a piece of art he’d created.

Lim noticed that art piece and was inspired to create a Youtube channel with Lee. Lim told Lee about his idea of making a youtube channel with him in a Chemistry class lecture. Lim told Lee that it would be a narration and art-based Youtube channel, where Lim would narrate, and Lee would draw.

Though Lee was initially apprehensive, he eventually accepted, and they uploaded their first video on their Youtube channel in 2014.

When Did Actually Stephen Join DanPlan?

Actually Stephen joined the DanPlan channel just a year after Daniel Lim and Hosuh Lee created the channel.

He was invited onto the channel by co-founded Hosuh Lee to film some videos and eventually became a part of the channel. Stephen became an editor and drew for the channel. He was known for being the “brutal” member of the channel. He earned that moniker because he would often joke about murder and knives.

So, for the first five years of the channel, it consisted of Daniel Lim, Hosuh Lee, Melodify, whose real name is Annabelle, and Stephen.

The responsibilities went as such:

  • Daniel Lim acted as the primary narrator of the channel’s videos and the one who asked members and guests questions.
  • Hosuh Lee originally was the main artist and animator for the channel until the work got too much for him, so they hired other animators too.
  • Melodify was an animator for the channel, and although not a current member, she still makes appearances here and there.
  • Actually Stephen edited the channel’s videos and drew and animated until his departure.

The channel also has some associated who, although they aren’t official members, do contribute to the channel:

  • Jay, a recurring member during the channel’s early days, had to leave because of poor internet service in his college dormitory. He has since returned.
  • Elias, who is Daniel’s brother, is usually animated with long bangs and blue hair. Though not an official member, he edits videos under Daniel’s supervision.
  • Nelly, Daniel’s friend, has his channel on Youtube called NelFather. His character is animated with a snapback and brown hair.
  • Theo, Daniel’s friend, and roommate, is animated with spikey red hair that goes upwards.

Why Did Actually Stephen Leave DanPlan?

Actually Stephen left DanPlan on January 5, 2020, because of disputes with Daniel Lim over money.

In his first video, titled “Actually, I Quit DanPlan,” on his channel, the Youtuber explained that he felt he was underfunded and unrecognized for his efforts in contributing to the DanPlan channel.

According to the YouTuber, he had had altercations with Lim over money and other concerns. This altercation started when he overheard Lim saying that Stephen contributed to less than 1% of DanPlan’s success.

Stephen further claimed that he was being paid less than $300 for his contributions as editor while Lim and Hosuh were making tens of thousands of dollars.

Their argument lasted for two days. The straw that broke the camel’s back was when Stephen asked Lim what he could do to make more money in DanPlan, to which Lim replied that he couldn’t do anything as he was just an employee.

Lim’s remarks made Stephen want to quit immediately, but he stayed out of respect for Housh. However, although Stephen decided to prove his worth in DanPlan, the next nine months only showed that Lim did not appreciate or value Stephen.

After realizing that nothing he did would make Lim appreciate or value him, Stephen quit the channel entirely.

Though the YouTuber has stated that he does not regret working in DanPlan, he no longer considers Daniel Lim his friend and thinks he is a terrible person. He has urged people not to join DanPlan because of his horrible treatment.

Why Did Actually Stephen Leave DanPlan? Daniel’s Point Of View

Daniel Lim made a reply video a couple of weeks after Actually Stephen posted his video.

Because Daniel had taken a bit of a break to address Stephen’s allegations, many people thought he was guilty. In his reply video, Daniel Lim talked about how taken aback he was by Stephen’s video as he had thought Stephen was his friend.

The YouTuber further explained that he thought Stephen was not interested in Youtube as a career path, and that’s why he never really cared about the pay.

In the fifty-five-minute video, Daniel addressed all of Stephen’s concerns with screenshots and receipts, which made some of Stephen’s claims come into question. The video’s fallout made Daniel Lim, and Actually Stephen looks bad. DanPlan took a three-month break after the video, but they have since returned and are making videos like usual.
