Indian Born English Author Salman Rushdie Got Stabbed On Stage At Chautauqua Institution- How Is He?

A staged attack occurred in New York state against author Salman Rushdie, who received years of death threats from Islamists after publishing The Satanic Verses.

His first book was published in 1975, but Midnight’s Children (1981), for which he received the Booker Prize, is considered one of his notable works and is set in contemporary India.

Similarly, he received the honorary title of “Sir” in 2007 after being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to literature. He has written over a dozen works, some of which are nonfiction.

Amid this, here are some details regarding the attack and the culprit behind the event.

Why Was Salman Rushdie Stabbed At Chautauqua Institution Speech?

Author Salman Rushdie was preparing to deliver a speech at an event at the Chautauqua Institution in New York, US, when he was stabbed in the neck.

He was reportedly helicoptered to a local hospital after the stabbing was confirmed by the New York Police Department, per NDTV.

In a tape that was uploaded online, bystanders can be seen flocking to the stage right after the occurrence. Besides, the incident left a second interviewee with minor head injuries, according to the NYPD.

After the assault, Rushdie collapsed to the ground, and the attacker was restrained. As per AP, the author was surrounded by a small group of individuals holding up his legs to improve the blood flow to his chest.

Further, hundreds of spectators were evacuated after gasping in horror at the atrocity.

Who Attacked The Satanic Verse Author Salman Rushdie And Why?

Rushdie, 75, was the target of threats, especially in the late 1980s, for his novel The Satanic Verses, which has been prohibited in Iran since 1988 due to claims that it is irreverent to Islam.

Ayatollah Khomeini, the supreme leader of Iran, mandated Rushdie’s execution and offered a $3 million (£2.5 million) reward a year after the book’s release.

Countless people died in the violence that erupted after its release, including the work’s translators who were killed.

Even though the Iranian government has disassociated itself from Khomeini’s order, the bounty on Mr. Rushdie’s head is still active.

The author, with dual citizenship in the US and the UK, strongly supports the right to free speech and has upheld his writing on numerous occasions.

Is The Culprit Behind The Stabbing Of Salman Rushdie Arrested?

According to the BBC, individuals at the scene are alleged to have subdued the attacker. Likewise, the AFP news agency reports that police have confirmed a stabbing but have chosen not to name the victim immediately.

Plus, the author’s health is also unknown at this time.

When approached by BBC News, a spokeswoman for the organization’s on-site police unit declined to comment.

An artist at the location claimed rehearsals usually proceeded until the attack inside the arena this morning. Since then, she added, the area has been under lockdown.

Update On Salman Rushdie’s Ex-Wife Padma Lakshmi And Their Split

When the author first met her ex-wife, Padma Lakshmi, in 1999, he described himself as the Indian Hemingway, which fascinated her.

When she discovered that Rushdie, who was much out of her league, was interested in her, she was shocked.

“He indeed was the best thing that has ever happened to me. It was almost incredible that someone of such grandeur and stature would want to take me out to lunch, “Lakshmi told People.

After Lakshmi was certain that Rushdie’s marriage to his third wife was irreparably broken, they finally moved in together. Besides, the couple got married in 2004, and the Emmy-nominated host recalled how passionate and “blissful” their early days of dating were.

Rushdie was also an Indian living in the West, so Lakshmi believed she had finally found someone who could relate to her. The cookbook author thought everything was going great, but she had no idea that her marriage would end in divorce.

Lakshmi’s culinary business grew along with their marriage, but her husband was resentful instead of applauding and encouraging his wife. They were bickering so frequently that he once referred to her as “a lousy investment.”

In contrast, the turning point occurred when Rushdie left on a trip and said that “the show must go on” following Lakshmi’s five-hour surgery, which left her with sutures and stents.

After Lakshmi recovered, she immediately scheduled a consultation with a divorce attorney, and their three-year marriage was abruptly over.
