CHAPTER ONE
1.0 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Dressing
is an out of putting on materials such as clothes and shores for the covering
and protection of the body. Isaacson (2000) observed that provocative mode led
to violence, theft gang activities and the likes an campuses. According to
Okoro (2006) dressing as an interpretation of an individual personality.
Dressing is an expression of oneself because, it is unique to each individual,
people dress differently based on what they find interesting.
Indecent
dressing simply means deliberate exposure of one’s body to the public. Indecent
dressing can also be referred to as provocative and extravagant dresses that
expose different contours of bodies in our society. The Guardian Newspaper (2006)
observed that indecent dressing is common among female students on campuses
through which they are either exposed totally or partially showing the
different contours of their bodies.
Nigeria
higher institutions presently are now seen as abode for this evil deed which
however has been accompanied by insecurity, rape and kidnappings. Indecent
dressing is the major cause of the various assault and sexual harassment
recorded in the society. Ladies now address half naked to occasionally in the
name fashion and this is contrary to the prestige place on African women. Every
culture according to article base. Com (2011) has dressing code that may vary
according to cultures. Despites this variation one thing is certain that every
culture has an acceptable dress code, so every dress code that deviate from the
one acceptable to the community is termed indecent.
The
terms decency and indecency have so much to do with the morality of the
individual person and as judged by others. A dress is therefore said to be
indecent when it has provocative or stimulating influence on almost all those
that happen to view it on the user. Egwin (2010) referred to indecent dressing as the attitude of some female or
male that dress to show off part of the body such as the breasts, buttocks or
even the underwear particularly those of the ladies that need to be covered.
The
reason for poor dressing of behaviours has a hydra-headed origin , it is a
behavior that developed over night, but the cause of it could be attributed to
the home (neglect &poor parenting) the effect of globalization arising from
wrong values exportation and importation, a reflection of the high rate of
moral decadence in the large society (corruption and high rate of indiscipline
among the headers and the led) poor pressure and the desire to belong as well
as fading values and demorization or demonce influence. According to (Omode and
Odiba 2000) the home is every child’s first window to the outside world, what
the parent do with the child at this level in terms of training and orientation
go a long way to determining what the
child become tomorrow. There is hardly any higher institution of learning in
this country that is not faced with this nauseating problem. The way student on
the campuses of learning particularly the female one’s dress seductively leaves
much to be desired.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The
ideal transaction between lecturers and student are confined in words of
teaching and learning. Some female student personality and interest can be
easily read from the way they have dressed to classroom. Most at times, male
lecturers find than attractive and approachable, especially when they dress
like harlot and call girls. At this point, the interest of the lecturers as
regards having an affair with such girls is aroused and lecturer student
relationship will go down the train while man friend and girlfriend
relationship begins or start.
When
such a thing happen between a lecturer and the students, the consequences may
be gravies and it might lead to a situation whereby the lecturer makes frantic
effort to make sure that the girls passes all her courses with good grade.
Besides, the girl in question may be pregnant and abandoned by the so called
randy lectures. This mayalso automatically lead to the end of the girls sojourn
on the campus.
Similarly,
the student may contract sexually transmitted infection (STI) from the lecturer
and Vice – Versa.
From
the foregoing, the researchers interest is aroused as to known the extent to
which indecent dressing among girls in tertiary institution can destroy the
lecturer – student relationship, geared towards achieving learning.
1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The
purpose of this study is to examine the issue of Indecent dressing among
undergraduates.

indecent dressing among female students in College of Education, Ekiadolor, Edo
State?

What are the effect of indecent dressing
among female students and their male lecturers in College of Education,
Ekiadolor, Edo State?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This
research work will be of benefit to numerous people. People that will benefit
from this research work ranges from individuals, the management of tertiary
institution both private and public, school counselors and psychologist, the
people in the Helm of government cooperate bodies like non-government
organization to teaching personnel like teachers and lecturers.
All
the people mention so far can easily lay their hands on this material
especially where the issue of indecent dressing is mentioned among female
students.
1.6 SCOPE/DETERMINATION
OF THE STUDY
This
study is delimited to College of Education, Ekiadolor, Edo State.
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
1. INDECENT: Indecent means showing part
of the body that are usually covered.
2. DRESSING: It’s the act of putting on
clothes to cover our body.
3. STUDENT: Student is a person who is
studying in a school, college, university etc
4. VIOLENCE: Violence is behavior which is
intended to hurt, injured or kill people.
5. PROVOCATIVE: Intended to make people
angry of upset
6. RAPE: It’s the act of forcing a woman
to have sexual intercourse against her will.
