The Remarkable Journey of Merrill J. Fernando: Founder of Dilmah Tea
In the lush green landscapes of a rural village in British-ruled Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka, a tea legacy was born in the year 1930. Merrill J. Fernando, the visionary behind Sri Lanka’s largest and most globally recognized tea brand, Dilmah, was destined to leave an indelible mark on the world of tea.
From an early age, Merrill Fernando found himself immersed in the world of tea plantations, igniting a fascination with the aromatic leaves. However, the coveted positions in tea tasting and trading were largely reserved for British expatriates. To his surprise, Merrill was selected to be part of the first group of Ceylonese individuals to receive training in the art of tea tasting, trading, and marketing at the prestigious tea school in Mincing Lane, London. There, he honed his skills and learned about the blending and mixing strategies employed to reduce Ceylon tea content and increase profits.
Upon returning to Sri Lanka, Merrill was recruited by A. F. Jones and Co. Ltd., a tea exporting company that catered to international blending and packing tea companies. However, significant political changes in 1956 saw the Sri Lankan government taking control of foreign-owned tea estates, leading the Jones family to leave the country. Seizing the opportunity, Merrill acquired the estate. But, in the wake of further nationalization of tea plantations in 1971-72 and conflicts with plantation shareholders, Merrill made a bold decision to step down and establish his own venture, MJF Exports, Ltd.
Under Merrill’s leadership, MJF Exports quickly rose to become the fourth-largest exporter of bulk tea to Australia and New Zealand. Major retailers in Australia recognized the quality and reliability of MJF’s tea and began sourcing their house brands from the company, earning Merrill and his team the trust of international markets.
Driven by the desire to restore integrity and authenticity to the tea industry, Merrill made a groundbreaking decision to create his own brand, Dilmah. He introduced single-origin tea, challenging the dominance of commodity tea with its unique and rich flavors. However, as Dilmah started to gain momentum, Sri Lanka was confronted with the outbreak of a civil war in 1983. Terrorist threats emerged, including one aimed at Sri Lankan exports that shook the tea industry. Despite these setbacks, Dilmah exhibited resilience and growth, proving its unwavering commitment to delivering premium tea to enthusiasts worldwide, even during the prolonged civil war that continued until 2009.
In 2016, Dilmah tea had established a presence in over 100 countries, becoming a symbol of excellence and authenticity in the world of tea. Throughout his journey, Merrill J. Fernando emphasized the importance of social responsibility and community support. In 2003, he launched the MJF Charitable Foundation, dedicated to providing aid and assistance to the underprivileged, embodying the core values of integrity and compassion that have defined Dilmah’s success.
Merrill J. Fernando’s inspiring story is a testament to his unwavering dedication to the art of tea and his commitment to uplifting communities. As Dilmah continues to flourish and touch lives around the globe, Merrill’s legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of tea enthusiasts and those who cherish the true essence of this beloved beverage.
