CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background to the Study

The ability to read is one of the determinant of student success or failure in school. A good reader has a better opportunity for grater achievement. As posited by Karlin (1964) quoted by Unoti (1995), achievement in reading is necessary to achievement is school and when no prevision is made for achievement by the poor reader that reader eventually is frustrated into miserable state or failure.

Ajibola (2006) state that, a reading habit is cultivated by individuals who are ready to give all their time and resources to it. The skill acquired in reading can promoted the acquisition or language skills like listening, speaking and writing.

According to Ogunseye (1976) to most Africans, the traditional and social structure does not encourage the reading habit. It is however, observed that one of the reasons why Nigerians do little recreational reading is that, the society is basically one with an oral tradition and recreation traditionally take the form of active participation in story telling for children in naming ceremonies, wedding et-cetera.

Lasisi (2007) asked a fundamental question on what books Nigerians read. His question include whether political office holders in the country read. It was clear from the tone of the question that, he fact that reading is not part or the culture of the people that control Nigerian destiny.

There is a common remark about the ways European think of Africans in terms of their relationship with books. The derogatory remark runs like this “if you want to hide something from an African, keep it in a book that is to say: African not read. In a culture which increasingly demands instance gain and gratification, many of today’s young people have not been trained from childhood to develop the skills of reading. This trait may have resulted to the failure of mothers to inculcate good read habit into their children.

Cullough and Trader (1967) quoted by Unoh stated that “reading proficiency is the royal road to knowledge” Bayo and Bisola (1985) defined reading as process by which a child can on the run, extract a sequence of cues from printed text and relate one to another so that he understand the message of the text. Reading can be assumed to have taken place only when the learner shares the ideas that the communicator intents to convey.

It is observed that many public primary school pupils in Abeokuta South can not read and write very well. More shocking, is that, some primary teachers who teach the pupils cannot themselves read and speak effectively.

Since primary school is the foundation of education there is no better place to start tackling the poor reading habit than in the primary school. There is no reason denying the fact that, reading takes a lot of energy from someone, but just like any other activity.

According to Scott (2012) it is estimated that out of every 16000 signals we receive from our senses, our brain only consciously process 40. A lot of the problems the children are facing are tied to the fact that they fail to read.

The success of pupils in school depends to a large extent on their ability to read and comprehend which is in turn depends on the support we give in promoting reading habit. Before effective reading can take place, the reader must pass through the following step: visual recognition that is, the reader must able to recognize or identify the linguistics symbols used. The reader should understand what the recognized means and the reader must be able to interpret the text in relation to his previous experience.

Habit, good or bad make you who you are. If you know how to change your habits then even a small effort can create bug changes.

Reading skills are built moment and day by day. Mother should let their children see them reading, share information from their own reading with children encourage intra-generational reading, telling relevant stories to them, taking them to library and provision of reading instrument materials. Mother should be in the forefront championing new innovative techniques and advocacy for reading promotion. Television watching, video and game playing, time should be limited, so as to increase reading time.

The impact of mothers on the promotion of reading habit of their children in academic setting is very crucial and cannot be undermined.
