Ilyasah Shabazz, the third child of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz, was born in the United States on July 22, 1962. She is an author best known for her biography Growing Up X, as well as a community organizer, social activist, and motivational speaker.
Shabazz was born in Brooklyn, New York. She was given the name Elijah Muhammad in honor of the spiritual and Black nationalist organization to which her parents belonged, the Nation of Islam. Shabazz is of English, Scotch, African-American, and African-Grenadian ancestry.
Shabazz witnessed her father’s murder in February 1965 when she was two years old together with her mother and sisters. She claims she doesn’t remember what happened.
