Senior Russian energy businessman Igor Shkurko was found dead in his cell at a jail in the eastern Siberian port city of Yakutsk. Shkurko, the deputy general director of the Russian energy company Yakutskenergo, had appealed the allegation that he had sought a bribe of £5,000 the day before he passed away.
Although Shkurko’s demise is still unknown to the general public, “preliminary data” indicates that there were no signs that it was a “criminal death.”
Numerous senior energy officials have suddenly passed away since Vladimir Putin’s fight in Ukraine started more than 13 months ago. One of them is the passing of Shkurko.
Shkurko was a member of the United Russia political party, which backs Vladimir Putin, but after the bribery allegation was made, his membership was suspended.
He was nevertheless remembered in a statement from his company as “an open, hospitable person with a big heart and a good sense of humor, the caring head of a close-knit family,” which was released to mourn his passing.
Shkurko, a married father of two sons, oversaw the Department of technical management at Yakutskenergo. The coldest location on earth, Yakutia, obtains electricity from this company.
Last month, the investigative news outlet Novaya Gazeta Europe and Transparency International Russia connected a string of unexplained deaths linking the Russian energy company Gazprom to a sophisticated “money-laundering scheme” that benefited a top gas executive’s family.
