The roots of ICEA LION Kenya can be traced to the very beginnings of the insurance industry in Kenya. In 1895 Smith Mackenzie & Company were appointed the agents of
Royal Exchange Insurance Company in Kenya, based in Mombasa. The agency eventually evolved into a Royal Exchange branch. In later years, this merged with Guardian Assurance, Atlas Assurance, Caledonian Insurance, Employers Liability Assurance and Commercial Union, among others, to form the Guardian Royal Exchange and Commercial Union groups in East Africa. In 1978, these groups, which had been run jointly, were converted into a local company, ICEA LION Kenya, which would soon emerge as a well respected brand within general insurance circles in the Kenyan market.
Besides the head office in Nairobi, the company has been operating a branch in Mombasa to serve the needs of its clients and intermediaries in the Coast region. Another branch in Eldoret was opened recently to serve the North Rift and Western Kenya clients.
The ICEA LION Kenya also invested in a subsidiary in Tanzania. This was to enhance growth through wider regional representation and to take advantage of the liberalized Tanzanian insurance market. Lion of Tanzania Insurance Company Limited, a joint venture with Tanzania Development Finance Company has grown into a leading general insurance company, transacting all classes of general insurance business.
Insurance Company of East Africa (ICEA) was established in 1964 by Eagle Star Insurance Company and Welfare Insurance Company, both of the UK, and the New Zealand Insurance Company. The company was incorporated on 10th November 1964. It started writing general business on 1st January 1965, and entered life assurance business a year later, in 1966. Its offices were at that time situated on the 3rd floor of City House, Wabera Street (then known as 4th Elliot Street), Nairobi.
We are a one-stop financial services provider offering innovative products and services in insurance, pensions, investments and trusts. Having delivered several innovative solutions to the market over the years, we have grown to become one of the largest financial service providers in the region with well-established operations in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The Group was formed when Insurance Company of East Africa Limited (ICEA) and Lion of Kenya Insurance Company Limited (LOK) merged in 2011.
We are structured in a way that enhances internal efficiencies as we protect and create wealth for our customers. Our companies are therefore separated into: life and non-life insurance, investment management and trusts.
Our life and non-life companies are ICEA LION Life Assurance Company and the ICEA LION General Insurance Company. ICEA LION Asset Management and ITSL Trust Company Limited are our investment and individual and corporate trusteeship companies. The insurance & investment subsidiaries in Uganda and Tanzania, previously controlled separately by ICEA and Lion of Kenya respectively, also form part of the ICEA LION Group.

ICEA LION General Insurance
ICEA LION General Insurance Company Limited is a subsidiary of the ICEA LION Insurance Holdings Limited, which was formed as a result of a merger between Insurance Company of East Africa Limited (ICEA) and Lion of Kenya Insurance Company Limited (LOK) in 2011.
The two companies were well known Insurance and financial services market leaders in Kenya and the wider Eastern Africa region. The merger resulted in the creation of one of the largest insurance groups in the region, with well established insurance operations in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania as well as leading subsidiaries in fund management and corporate trusteeship.
A key element of this consolidation has been the establishment of separate life and non-life insurance companies in Kenya. ICEA LION Kenya is a dedicated life assurer while ICEA LION Kenya is a general insurance company with both operating as subsidiaries of ICEA LION Kenya Insurance Holdings Limited.
This separation enables each entity have complete focus on its core business, for enhanced customer service, specialization, internal efficiency and competitiveness. The consolidation was also consistent with the government’s declared intention to encourage movement in this direction.
The insurance subsidiaries in Uganda and Tanzania, previously controlled separately by ICEA and Lion of Kenya respectively, also form part of the ICEA LION Kenya Group, as does ICEA’s asset management subsidiaries in Kenya and Uganda (as well as ITSL – ICEA LION Kenya trustee and scheme administration subsidiary in Kenya).

Our award winning investment management company is a research-driven investment manager, delivering superior returns for both our retail and institutional clients. We offer investment opportunities in Kenya as well as offshore.We are the only Fund Manager that demonstrates a 30 year track record of property development & investment in Kenya, with a property portfolio currently valued at Kshs12 billion.
We also actively participate in seeking alternative investment opportunities, including Private Equity, for our Clients. We currently hold Kshs106 billion in assets under management.
