He previously hosted The Late Show which aired on talkSPORT at 10 pm from Monday to Thursday. Though one would think and judge at first sight of the show’s name that the show would be a sport show, it was non-sport and instead took a comedic or observational look at news and current affairs.
He confirmed that his Late Show that would air on 2 September, at 10 am, would be his last for talkSPORT and that his departure, after working for the station for 16 years, had been planned amicably since June 2011. During the last show, he loosely gave the idea that he would be involved in political debates in some capacity, and may make future appearances on talkSPORT, although he did not clarify this.
Afterwards, he became a presenter on Invicta FM in Kent. It was a newly launched Talk Radio UK in 1995 and now its known as talkSPORT. He is the station’s longest serving presenter. From 1995 to 2002, Collins presented the Overnight show, Ian Collins and the Creatures of the Night before the Late-Night Weekend Show, Ian Collins: Unbranded from 2002 to 2004 as he replaced Tommy Boyd.
He also presented the afternoon show having replaced Paul Hawksbee and Andy Jacobs. The show ran from 1 pm to 4 pm for a short time at the start of the Iraq War in 2003. Collins replaced Mike Dickin on the mid morning show from 10 am to 1 pm in 2004, including a spell co-hosting the show with Mike Parry. In May 2006, he began hosting the The Ultimate Late Show, from 1 am to 5 am. He was a writer and producer of the show too alongside Alan Hyde.
After James Whale left the station, Collins moved in to the slot and did the show from 10 pm to 1 am in 2008. He also presented The Incredibly Early Breakfast Show between 5 am and 6 am. He presented his first show on LBC 97.3 on 19 February 2012. He joined BBC Radio Kent in 2014. The station was re-launching as a Sassy, Punchy, in-your-face radio station aimed at a far younger audience than virtually every other BBC Local Radio station.
His first TV appearance was made on cable channel L!VE TV in the late 1990s.
He often appears on The Daily Politics – BBC2, This Week – BBC1, BBC News 24, Sky News and London Tonight, and was TalkSport’s presenter of choice during major news events such as the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza conflict.
Ian Collins Book
The British presenter has written two books, his first being “I Bet You Won’t Read This: Confessions Of A Night Time Radio Host” (ISBN 0953979806). This book includes unedited letters that had been sent into his show. It also offers tips on how to get into the radio industry.
His second book is titled – 67 People I’d Like to Slap. It was published on 11 April 2017. It describes Collin’s journey through the labyrinth in the world of human anger and annoyance. He lists, explains, exposes and mocks that dumb-assed contingent of the human race whose job, it seems, is to make life just a tad more infuriating than it actually needs to be.
Being a close friend to Danny Wallace, he is featured severally in his books including “Are You Dave Gorman?”, “Join Me”, “Yes Man”, and “Friends Like These”.
Ian Collins LBC
On August 24 2018, the Late night presenter, Ian Collins left LBC to take some time off. this happened days before Eddie Mair was due to join the station. Ian gave reasons for his sudden departure through a video he share don his social media platform.
He said: “By the time you see this I will have left LBC after five years, I’ve done my very last late show.
“There’s no conspiracy, I’ve not died or been fired, this is just about having a large chunk of time off, I’ve worked these hours for about 15 years now so just need a big long kip.”
His departure came just days before Eddie Mair took over a new week-day show on the station. An announcement about which show Eddie will be hosting is overdue, but a start date of September 3rd has been added to Eddie’s Twitter profile.
An LBC spokesperson told RadioToday: “Ian Collins has decided to step down from LBC. He is a terrific broadcaster who has made a huge contribution to LBC during his time with us. He leaves with our very best wishes.”
Ian also thanked the incredible teams he’s worked for and with during his time at LBC, and for the listeners for getting in touch with the show.
