Huma Mahmood Abedin was born on July 28, 1976 in Cairo, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Both parents are scholars. Her father, Syed Zainul Abedin (1928-1993), was a Ph.D. The University of Pennsylvania proprietor and her mother, Saleha Mahmood Abedin, received their Ph.D. She attended the same school as her husband and is currently Associate Professor of Sociology and Dean at Dar Al-Hekma College in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
When she was two years old, her parents and her two siblings – a brother named Hassan Abedin and a sister named Heba Abedin – moved to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. There she grew up and received her basic education before finally returning to the United States.
