How to wash furry pillows

Wash Your Faux Fur Pillows in a Washing Machine

Set the washing machine to use cold water and the delicate wash cycle. Use only a mild laundry detergent, designed for hand washing. Turn the machine on and add a detergent. A detergent that is too strong can damage the faux fur or cause it to lose its color.

You can hand-wash or machine–wash faux fur. However, if you decide to wash faux fur in a washer, use a high-efficiency washer on the gentle cycle for the best results. The same cleaning techniques recommended for faux fur coats can be used for faux fur blankets, throws, and removable pillow covers.

Just a few things to keep in mind when wearing faux furs: unlike real furs, faux furs CAN get wet, but it doesn’t mean they should. It’s best to keep it dry whenever possible. Snow and rain won’t ruin it, but use an umbrella when possible to protect the furs.

Never put faux fur in the dryer!

Instead, lay the items flat on a towel, use an indoor drying rack, or hang on your shower rod to dry. Reposition often so that the fur stays fluffy, and smooth out the fur so it doesn’t get knotted. Drying can take from 24 – 48 hours depending on the garment.

Hairspray works with real hair, not synthetic fibers. To use hairspray, you‘ll have to use so much that it adheres to itself rather than the fiber. It’s possible, but the texture won’t be nice at all, and it runs the risk of damaging the fibers due to the alcohol.

Brush faux fur weekly to prevent buildup and tangles.

You don’t have to do this when the jacket is in storage, but it’s a great idea in the winter when you’re wearing your jacket a lot. Run a firm bristle brush or pet hair brush in the direction of the fur once a week to prevent matting and get rid of tangles.

In order to prevent your fur coat from shedding, take your fur to a furrier for storage during warmer months. They are able to closely monitor and control temperature and humidity in their facilities, which will keep your coat in top condition until the cooler months arrive.

Direct sunlight can dry out a fur coat and cause it to begin shedding. To avoid this, store the coat in a cool, dark place where it is not exposed to light or heat. This does not mean that you can’t wear your coat out in the sunlight ever.

When cutting faux fur, make small snips on the backing knit fabric only and avoid cutting the fur pile. You don’t want to cut the fur pile during cutting, it will result in uneven fur pile visible around the seams. You can also use a box cutter with a fresh, sharp blade to cut the fur backing.

Fill the washing machine with cold water and a gentle powder detergent. Skip the fabric softener and bleach, as this can break down fibers of the fleece and cause it to pill or shed. Air dry the jacket on a towel rack or other flat surface. This allows the jacket to retain its original shape.

If shedding persists, brush the fur like you would brush a cat. A final suggestion would be to use a masking tape lint roller rolled against the grain of the fur. Each of these methods will shed loose fibers.

Cut faux fur.
